Global Students Forum to Organize Cop27 Pre-Summit in Accra

At the Pre-Summit, AASU's climate team will highlight the initiatives, actions, and projects it has pursued in line with SDG 13.

Global Students’ Forum (GSF), in conjunction with the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) will host the COP-27 Pre-Summit on the theme Students United for The Planet in Accra to strengthen the international student community’s commitment to environmental justice and climate advocacy.

According to a press statement issued by the Secretary General of All-Africa Students Union (AASU), Peter Kwasi Kodjie, the umbrella organization of the world’s major representative student federations, Global Student Forum, will commence the Pre-Summit on Monday, 10 October, and conclude on Friday, 15 October 2022. The statement explained that, the Pre-summit will provide advocacy training on climate justice for sixty climate activists from all over the world.

The statement also noted that, the COP27 Pre-Summit which is under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana, is anticipated to spark discussions about climate justice, collaborative mapping of shared experiences, and climate advocacy and develop a common understanding of these issues and solutions. It further indicated that, the Pre-Summit aims to support the work that students are already doing to influence climate policy decisions.

According to the statement, the COP27 Pre-Summit will examine the impact(s) of climate change on education worldwide and what decision-makers must do to ensure the long-term viability of the educational systems. At the Pre-Summit, AASU’s climate team will highlight the initiatives, actions, and projects it has pursued in line with SDG 13.

The statement further asserted that, the high point of the Pre-Summit would be the Joint Statement for Climate Justice Education from Global Youth, containing key discussions, debates, and deliberations, which would be presented to the Heads of State meeting at the COP27 summit in Egypt later in the year.

The All-African Student Union (AASU) therefore expressed its profound gratitude to Global Student Forum (GSF) and Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration for convening this high-level COP27 Pre-Summit here in Accra.
