KTC defends Otumfuo, exposes KK, others in Offinsomanhene standoff

The Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) has vehemently refuted allegations placing blame on Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for the deadlock in appointing an Offinsomanhene.

During a press conference in Kumasi, the KTC clarified that the Asantehene has not interfered negatively in Offinso Stool affairs. Instead, the council points fingers at Offinsohemaa, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, and her elders as hindrances to the selection process.

Representatives from the KTC, including Nana Gyedu Kumanin IV and Akyamfour Asafo Boakye Agyeman Bonsu, held a press conference to dispel misconceptions.

The KTC highlighted that the Asantehene has given multiple opportunities for the Offinsohemaa to nominate a suitable royal for the Offinso Stool.

However, the Offinsohemaa’s persistence in advocating for Dr K.K. Sarpong, who is not a royal, has been identified as the primary obstacle.

In a firm statement, the KTC urged a halt to the “stubbornness and uncustomary behaviour,” emphasizing that Offinso deserves a leader chosen without interference. The KTC underscored that throughout Asante history, the Asantehene does not impose Chiefs and heads on paramountcies but ensures adherence to customary practices.

The Offinso Wiafe Akenten Stool became vacant following the passing of Nana Wiafe Akenten III two years ago. The KTC’s declaration follows concerns raised by factions purportedly from Offinso, suggesting a breach of the Asantehene’s authority.

To address the impasse, the Asantehene directed Offinso Stool elders to bring all 17 Ahyirem contestants, excluding Dr. K.K. Sarpong, for guidance. However, legal actions were initiated by Abusuapanin Akwasi Amoo and Robert Ahenkan, challenging Asante customs, practices, and norms, which the KTC views as a direct challenge to the Asantehene’s authority.

The KTC emphasized that Offinsohemaa does not have the right to summon a traditional council meeting in the absence of an Omanhene. They stressed the need for adherence to established customs and procedures for selecting and enstooling paramount Chiefs (Amanhene). The chiefs also refuted claims challenging the Asantehene’s authority over Offinso lands, citing historical precedents.

The impasse surrounding the Offinsomanhene appointment reflects a complex interplay of tradition, custom, and legal challenges that the KTC aims to navigate in collaboration with local stakeholders.
