Two schools in the Ashanti Region were ravaged by fire in two separate incidents.

The first fire which occurred Thursday morning reduced a boys’ dormitory at Oppong Memorial SHS, a community school in the Bosome Freho District to ashes.

Property worth thousands was destroyed in the building that housed more than 300 students.

Headmaster of the school Prince Charles said all victims will be allowed to go home to get new books and other learning materials.

“This block used to house over 300 students and now they are all displaced and all their learning materials were razed by the fire so we are planning to break the affected students on Friday so they can go home and collect money to buy new books and other learning materials,” he told Kumasi-based Luv FM.

As authorities gathered to mobilise support for the Oppong Memorial SHS and discuss the way forward to avoid such incidents, bad news struck again; a fire was reported at Asempayetia Day Care International School.

The fire which broke out at the school located at Trabuom in the Atwima Kwanwoma District at about 18:30hrs, destroyed at least three classrooms.

The Asempayetia fire incident occurred less than 24hours after the Oppong Memorial SHS fire.

In both incidents, students were not injured but emotionally affected.

Though the firefighters declared the situation was under control, it could not establish the cause of both cases.

The fires raised many questions over how schools are prepared to deal with such incidents.

A similar incident occurred at Accra Academy, located at Bubuashie in Ghana’s capital Accra.

It was the second time the school had recorded a fire incident at the beginning of January 2020.

Investigations are underway.
