A/R: Chief Imam condemns Police shooting at Islamic SHS, wants Commander punished
“The commander who instructed his men to fire live bullet failed, he has to be punished for that. We are waiting for the Inspector General of Police to discuss this with him. These are students who were demonstrating they weren’t armed so why do you fire live bullet?”
Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Abdul Mumin, has said the Police commander who ordered that students of Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi should be shot at, should be punished for his action.
He condemned the action of the Police.
“The commander who instructed his men to fire live bullet failed, he has to be punished for that. We are waiting for the Inspector General of Police to discuss this with him. These are students who were demonstrating they weren’t armed so why do you fire live bullet?” he told TV3’s Ibrahim Abubakar in interview on Monday June 13.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is heading to the Islamic Senior High School following the disturbances and Police shooting on the campus.
This was announced by the Police in a statement on Monday, June 13.
“The Inspector General of Police is proceeding to Kumasi for a first hand assessment of the situation. The Police have commenced investigation into the incident,” the statement said.
The Police assured that investigations have commenced into the matter.
Over thirty students of the Islamic Senior High School have been rushed to the hospital after the police allegedly fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse students who were demonstrating over incessant vehicular knockdown.
Worried parents stormed the school to demand for the release of their wards on Monday June 13.
The affected students were conveyed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and other hospitals in Kumasi.
“I should be worried but some of them have been resituated . we will follow to the hospital and see how they are doing,” Madam Mary Owusu Afriyie, the Regional Education Director told journalists.
