A/R: SHS student jailed 15 years for robbery

A Circuit Court at Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region has convicted and sentenced an 18-year-old student of the Adanwomase Senior High School to fifteen years imprisonment with hard labour for robbing a teacher.

According to reports, on March 4, 2024, at about 7:30 am, the student was said to have robbed one Matilda Boatema with a jackknife near her residence in Adanwomase in the Ashanti region.

Reports further revealed that the convict, Gabriel Osei Kwame robbed her of her Infinix Hot 9 smartphone valued at GH¢700 cedis, cash amount of GH¢570, rice, stew, and some documents.

Facts of the incident disclosed that Matilda reported the robbery to the Asonomaso police, who swiftly responded to the scene.

Upon investigation, the complainant’s bag was discovered in a nearby bush with her phone and cash taken.

The police further gathered evidence from the scene and, on March 25, Matilda identified Gabriel in the company of a friend in Adanwomaso where he was arrested and handed over to the Asonomaso police.

Upon initial interrogations, Gabriel denied any involvement in the robbery but later confessed to the police.

According to the police, the accused admitted to robbing the complainant and disclosed that he sold the stolen phone at Adum PZ for GH¢250 and was subsequently charged with robbery.

However, state prosecutor, Inspector Alfred Aruk, told the court that Gabriel was unable to assist in recovering the phone.

In court, Gabriel Osei Kwame pleaded guilty to the robbery charge, as per section 149 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act (Act 29) of 1960.

The judge, Festus Nukunu, then imposed the sentence on Gabriel Osei Kwame for his involvement in the robbery.
