Four suspects arrested; Nana 1 gunned down

After a manhunt, four suspects – Kweku Mintah, Mugabe, Davis Jangulo and 32-year-old Frederick Mensah also known as Nana 1 – were arrested.

Frederick Mensah also known as Nana 1

Nana 1 who was leading the police to the location of their booty decided to make a clean break from the gun-wielding officers. The able-bodied suspect was shot after attempts to re-arrest him failed.

Sup. Kwabena Acheampong a crime officer of the Tarkwa Divisional Command at that time, said the suspect died at the Tarkwa Government hospital.

“He was the most self-confessing among all the suspects we have arrested,” the Crime Officer said.

“He has provided police with a lot of information as to how the robbery was planned, where it was planned, the people who took part in the planning… the roles assigned to the conspirators.”

The Crime Officer said three suspects live in Tarkwa while five more joined in from unknown towns.

Another suspect shot dead at East Legon in Accra

Another suspect was also shot dead by police while planning another robbery operation at East Legon in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

Undercover personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate monitored and eventually arrested one of the suspects named as Amponsah Kojo, aged 46, at Ablekuma Olebu.

He confessed to taking part in the Bogoso robbery and led the team to Achimota to apprehend his accomplices.

At the Achimota bus terminal, one of his accomplices on seeing the police team, fled towards the motorway in the lane for oncoming vehicles whilst firing back at the police. Police pursued him and fired back at him.

At the Okponglo traffic light, the suspect’s vehicle collided with a Range Rover after which he was apprehended by police.

Indications are that he was wounded in the firefight and died whilst being rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment.

A handgun with 30 rounds of ammunition was retrieved from the deceased suspect’s vehicle.

His accomplice identified him as Nathaniel Ibu, a Nigerian, who led the gang from Accra to Bogosu to rob and kill the Lance corporal.

All the surviving suspects, numbering about six, are facing trial at a court in Tarkwa, in the Western Region.
