Academically Underperformed GIJ Students risk being withdrawn

Students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism who underperform academically risk being withdrawn from the school, according to new directives from school authorities.

This is contained in a Memo signed by the Institute’s Registrar, Dr J. Sika Akoto (Ph.D.), to all students.

The section of the Memo, indicating the grounds for withdrawing students reads:

i. All freshmen and women who fail three (3) or more of their courses at any point (1st semester, 2nd semester or both) shall be withdrawn.

ii. A continuing student who fails in 50% or more of courses being taken at any point (1st semester, 2nd semester) shall be withdrawn.

iii. A Postgraduate student who fails three (3) or more courses at any given time shall be withdrawn from the Institute.

Also, continuing students who fail three (3) to five (5) courses shall repeat the level and pass all courses offered at that level before progressing.

The repeating student shall join the class, complete assignments and take part in mid/end-of-semester examinations.

A student who is repeating shall pay the current fee for the level to be determined by the Institute and attend lectures for all courses concerned at that level to be able to redeem himself or herself before proceeding to the next level.

All continuing students shall be eligible to repeat a level two (2) times only after which they shall be withdrawn from the Institute if they are unable to redeem themselves.

A student who is unable to redeem him/herself shall be required to show cause why she or she should not be withdrawn from the Institute.

The Memo further explained the school’s retake policy which was first announced in 2018 by the Institute’s Rector, Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo.
