Former President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo over his plan to make Accra the cleanest city in West Africa by the end of his first term.
The presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says if that is a promise the president made then he has ”failed badly”.
In a social media interaction with Ghanaians on Monday, the former president said Accra has become the dirtiest city in West Africa as compared other cities he has been to.
He further threw salvos at the Sanitation Ministry and the Minister questioning why the Ministry was established.
According to him, the Ministry has achieved nothing over the past three years and that, it was one of the useless ministries under the NPP government.
He has therefore promised to scrap the ministry and give back the issue of sanitation to the local authority with a deputy minister in charge of sanitation.
He further slammed thew ruling government for failing to continue with his national sanitation programme describing it as politically motivated.
Mr. Mahama said he was ever ready to join Ghanaians on the campaign should the current government reintroduce it.
Hr recounted how he ”lampooned” for clearing weeds that had evaded the newly constructed Military Cemetary.
This action according to him was taken to trash down the unwanted grass in the middle belt of the ‘Mahama’ Road in front of the new Military Cemetary which is serving as a blockee for motorists who ply that route towards the roundabout.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017 pledged to make Accra the neatest and best city in Africa by the end of his first term of office.
“The commitment we are making and which I want you all to make with me is that by the time we end our four-year term, Accra is going to be the cleanest city in Africa,” he stated.
The President pledged in an address he delivered after he had been installed a chief by the people of Jamestown and the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council under the title Nii Kwaku Abladey Okudzeaman I, which means ‘Royal Warrior who champions the welfare of his people’.
