The African Electoral Institute (AEI) is calling for an “unedited” broadcast of IPAC meetings to facilitate transparency with regard to the integrity and robustness of the 2024 voter register.

In a statement, AEI said: “Unedited  broadcasts of such important meetings will enable the electorate to witness discussions and decisions firsthand, hence promoting openness and inclusivity.”

The unedited broadcast, AEI argued, “Will ensure the EC and IPAC are accountable for their actions and commitments to the electorate.”

Further to that, the civil society group noted that: “Unedited broadcast will enhance the EC’s credibility by showcasing its commitment to transparency per its core values” of transparency, fairness and integrity.

“This will ultimately reduce speculation, rumours, and misinformation about the voter register,” the group pointed out.

In view of the above reasons, AEI says it “supports the unedited broadcast of IPAC meetings to promote trust, transparency, accountability and ultimately strengthen Ghana’s democratic processes, political stability, and a peaceful credible election for  national cohesion.”

It says such a move is important because the 7th December 2024 general election in Ghana is “critical” for the country’s democratic growth, economic development, and regional stability.

It noted that Ghana has a reputation for “peaceful transfer of power, and this election will further consolidate Ghana’s democratic credentials and political stability.”

“A credible and robust voter register is the foundation of a fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process, ensuring the integrity of democracy.”
