Afenyo-Markin writes to UEW Council
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has written to the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), to do the needful – reverse its decision that led to the interdiction of some officers at the University.
The call on the University Governing Counsel comes on the heels of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigations that rather exonerated the interdicted Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof Mawutor Avoke, and the Finance Officer, Dr Theophillus Senyo Akorli.
The outcome of the investigation that has compelled the Effutu Constituency MP to take to the pen was that Reverend Father Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, who led the crusade in calling for the heads of the above-mentioned persons, was seeking equity with unclean hands.
As a representative of the people of the Effutu Constituency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin is urging the University Governing Council to write the wrong by doing the needful, as well as taking the appropriate action for justice and fairness to prevail.
He did this through a letter dated October 24, 2019, titled: “Report of the Economic and Organised Crime Office investigations in University of Education, Winneba Governance and Procurement issues.”
The letter pointed the fact that “Following a series of complaints from lecturers and administrative staff, led by the then Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Rev Fr Prof Afful-Broni, I filed a petition through the Minister for Education for same to be investigated.
“All documents in support of the allegations were handed over to me, either directly by Rev Fr Prof Afful-Broni, or workers he directed to submit to my office.”
The legislature disclosed that prior to the filing of the petition, Rev Fr Prof Afful-Broni, Prof Nicholas Abeka and some other lecturers held a series of meetings with him at his residence, as well as the office, just to justify their claim of the allegations against the six affected persons.
According to him, after becoming aware of the completion of the EOCO investigations, first through Rev Fr Prof Afful Broni, he formally wrote to EOCO for a copy of the report.
“I have read in detail the report of EOCO, and it appears, regrettably, that Rev Fr Prof Afful-Broni, while he was the lead complainant of the procurement irregularities and persistently urged my office same, was indicted, whereas his boss, Prof Mawutor Avoke, and the Finance Officer, Dr Theophillus Senyo Akorli, were completely exonerated by EOCO off any wrong doing,” he stated.
In this regard, he said: “I expect that in the interest of justice and fairness, your Council, upon receipt of the report, will do the needful and take appropriate action. I need to reiterate that Ghanaians are following the events of the University of Education, Winneba, keenly.”
EOCO concluded that most of the allegations brought before it were mere speculations, while others were simply untrue and not substantiated by evidence.
