Aggrieved Ghanaians threaten to commence process to remove EC Chairperson

Some Aggrieved Ghanaians have served a notice of their intention to petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Adukwei Mensah.

The Aggrieved Ghanaian Citizens say the decision by the EC to compile a new voter’s register without recourse to the use of the old voter identity card and birth certificate is an attempt to disenfranchise them in the December polls.

The group contend that “any attempt to disenfranchise them or endanger their lives in any exercise to re-register voters during the Coronavirus pandemic leaves them with no other option than to resort to constitutional means to stop you, thus the intended Article 146 Petition,” this is contained in a statement issued in Accra late Thursday signed by Chris A. Ackummey, Solicitor for the Citizens addressed to Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensah and copied to the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, Chairman of the Council of State, President of the National House of Chiefs, Secretary to the President and Chairman of the EC Eminent Advisory Committee.

They have leveled eleven (11) point allegations against the EC Chairperson including gross incompetence, procurement breaches, conflict of interest, collusion, display of falsehood and insincerity and endangering millions of Ghanaians lives through registration exercise in the midst of COVID-19.

The rest are perjury before the Parliamentary Special Budget Committee, defiance of COVID-19 restrictions, organizing illegal Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings, disregard for court directive on the Representative of the Peoples’ Amendment Law (ROPAL) and refusal of birth certificate and voters ID card for registration.

The aggrieved persons have therefore given the EC Chairperson fourteen (14) days to respond to their concerns failure to which will compel them to send their petition to the country’s President to begin the process for her removal from office.

The EC in preparing for the general election in December has served notice it will be compiling a new voter’s register in the last week of June, 2020 to replace the old one.

Even before the Aggrieved Ghanaian Citizens go ahead with their intention, the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also filed a suit against the EC at the country’s apex court, the Supreme Court.
