Followers of persons interested in becoming the flagbearer of the party have poisoned the atmosphere within the political space with mudslinging against persons they consider as a threat to the aspiration of their candidates.

Gossips, lies and backbiting have engulfed the New Patriotic Party (NPP), going forward into the elections of 2024.

Aspiring Presidential candidates and those who are interested in becoming national executives of the party and, madly enough, persons seen as potential running mates, have all been jotted down for grubby agenda against them.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who from all indications will be seeking the mandate of the NPP delegates to lead the party in 2024, is at the receiving end of the grimy game currently going on in the NPP.

The man, who, on three consecutive elections, was the running mate of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is today seen as a ‘stranger’ in the NPP family.

Strangely, it was the same NPP family that touted Dr. Bawumia as the economic wizard who played a significant role in the party’s victory in 2016.

Today, because of pettiness and backbiting, those who are against Dr. Bawumia’s candidature are claiming that he is an albatross on the neck of the party because he has not been consistent with some of the things that he says.

As if the handlers and those who backed him in the past are hypnotized, nobody is defending Dr. Bawumia, as he has become the punching bag of certain persons in the NPP.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who, like Dr. Bawumia, will contest to lead the NPP into 2024, is also suffering because there are a lot of gossips and lies about him.

There are murmurings to the effect that the Trades Minister is likely to disembark from the NPP Presidential race at the last hour, something his handlers have discounted.

Apart from that, it is being bandied around that Mr. Kyerematen is being pushed by a certain powerful traditional ruler, something which has turned out to be false.

It is instructive to note that Mr. Kyerematen has contested in three Presidential primaries of the NPP and in 2007 had to concede to Nana Akufo-Addo at that year’s congress when the race went into a runoff.

He was hailed as a true democrat at the time for doing something that brought unity in the NPP.

That same Mr. Kyerematen, because of viciousness, is said to have conceded to Nana Akufo-Addo in 2007 because he saw the signs on the wall that he was going to be humiliated if the runoff had taken place.

Those who are interested in becoming national executives of the NPP have not been spared the wicked machinations currently prevailing in the party.

For instance, incumbent General Secretary, Mr. John Boadu, has been attacked from all angles by persons who are supporting other candidates to unseat him.

However, Mr. Boadu has not responded to the attacks targeted at him and is minding his business as the General Secretary of the NPP.

Madam Kate Gyamfuah, National Women’s Organizer, is also on the radar of those engaged in the hot gossips and lies as she moves to retain her seat.

The women’s leader, who over the years has conducted herself creditably and has served the NPP in various capacities, is being pelted with issues relating to how her mining equipment was destroyed and her involvement in small-scale mining.

Mr. Justin Frimpong Kodua, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and aspiring General Secretary of the NPP, is also in the mix of the backbiting, gossips and lies.

Some imaginary wrongdoings are being compiled to attack him with as the race towards the election of national executives heats up.

Surprisingly, Mr. Kodua, who has officially declared his intention to contest, has on no occasion punched any of the aspirants, but was rather concentrating on what he would do for the party should he be voted into office.

What is making the whole murky agenda extremely dangerous is how persons who are seen as potential running-mate for the party are being dressed with the gown of lies.

Most of the targeted persons are Ministers of State and their own party colleagues are sweeping their ministries to find dirt against them.

It is expected that events will get uglier as the party moves to elect national executives by July, this year and flagbearer at a later date.
