The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has fiercely criticized President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as the undeserved conferment of national honors on controversial figures.

Speaking at the commemoration of the 31st December Revolution in Nungua on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, Asiedu Nketia labeled the awards ceremony as a “charade” and accused the NPP of rewarding individuals with questionable records.

He singled out recipients such as Hawa Koomson and Bryan Acheampong, accusing them of misconduct.
“How would anybody with his head properly screwed on honor someone like Hawa Koomson, who shoots at people, or Bryan Acheampong? For the NPP, there is nothing wrong with pulling guns and shooting,” he said.

Asiedu Nketia argued that state honors should be reserved for individuals of distinction, not those he referred to as “vigilante boys and girls.”

He further stated that by giving such awards, the Akufo-Addo administration was sending a dangerous message to the youth that looting state resources and engaging in violence is acceptable behavior.

The NDC Chairman called for the establishment of an independent committee to determine who truly deserves national awards, rather than leaving the process to what he termed “the whims and caprices” of people like president Akufo-Addo..

A “Second Revolution”

Asiedu Nketia also characterized the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections as a “second revolution,” attributing it to the Akufo-Addo administration’s mismanagement of the economy and widespread suffering among Ghanaians. He emphasized the need for strong institutions over strongmen in rebuilding the country.

“There is no doubt about the broken economy, which we have to fix. What we need to reset is the values that define us as a people,” he noted.

Call for Unity and Patience

Other speakers at the event, including NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey and Klottey Korle MP Zanetor Rawlings, called for party unity and patience. Kwetey urged supporters to avoid lobbying for positions prematurely, assuring them that a successful government would benefit everyone.

The ceremony, which commemorated the revolutionary spirit of December 31, 1981, served as a platform for the NDC leadership to outline their vision for the “Better Ghana Agenda” under John Mahama’s incoming administration while critiquing the policies and actions of the outgoing Akufo-Addo-led government.
