Akufo-Addo gov’t has had weakest media in terms of critical journalism; yet most repressive – MFWA
“The signals were clear and some of us had always raised concerns about developments in the country. I have had cause to say that this government has had the weakest media in terms of critical journalism and it is experiencing the most repressive tendencies in terms of press freedom.
The Media Foundation for West Africa, Sulemana Braimah, says the media under President Akufo-Addo is unable to perform its critical journalism role in the country.
According to its Executive Director, Sulemana Braimah, despite this, the government appears to be the most repressive in terms of press freedom.
This comes on the back of the release of the World Press Freedom index which saw Ghana slump to its lowest-ever ranking in close to two decades after it dropped 30 places.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Sulemana Braimah said he was not surprised at Ghana’s poor showing on the table and called on the government to put in measures to enhance press freedom in the country
“The signals were clear and some of us had always raised concerns about developments in the country. I have had cause to say that this government has had the weakest media in terms of critical journalism and it is experiencing the most repressive tendencies in terms of press freedom. I am not surprised, to say the least. As I said with the developments we were seeing in this country, it is not surprising that other countries have overtaken us. I however did not expect that we drop this low.”
