Akufo-Addo provides justification for Appointing over 123 Ministers

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has mounted a strong defence for his mega-size government, insisting that it is producing results.

While his critics insist that there is not much to show for the ‘elephant-size’ government, the President holds a contrary view, giving his men and women ‘A’ on the scorecard.

He said the government’s current achievement could not be attained with a smaller number of ministers.

President Akufo-Addo, during the media encounter at the Jubilee House on Friday, said the size of Ministers is necessary for the performance and fulfillment of its key campaign promises.

“The machinery of government is such that if the political direction at the top is not strong then the delivery becomes an issue. I still stand by the fact that the numbers were necessary for the work that we have done, ” he maintained.

“When you look at the current output it would have been difficult to achieve any of this, ” he added.

Currently, the number of Ministers in Akufo-Addo administration is a little above 120, with many questioning the size of the government amidst cries about scanty resources and prudent management of the public purse.

Among the key campaigners asking the President to cut down the size of his government is the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

In August this year, Mr Mahama argued “the reduction of ministers will make no difference to the already lacklustre performance of the Akufo-Addo administration.”
