Akufo-Addo to meet U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce over Accra Sky Train project
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to hold talks with the United States Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Karen Dunn Kelley, in South Africa, to discuss government’s plans to establish a robust infrastructure for the development of the country’s railway system, ABC News can report.
The meeting between the two leaders is expected to bother on the Accra Sky Train Project and how it can be completed in no time to propel the nation towards its desired feat.
The Akufo-Addo government, since taking over the administration of the country has expressed its commitment to revamping the rail sector, as such, it has taken a series of actions to get the sector back on its feet to boost trade and investment in Ghana.
In November 2018, Ghana signed an agreement with a South African group, Africa Investment (Ai) SkyTrain Consortium, for the construction of the Accra Sky Train Project.
The Railways Development Minister, Joe Ghartey, who signed the agreement for Ghana on the sidelines of the Africa Investment Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa noted that it will check the road traffic congestion in Accra and its attendant adverse effects on economic activities, pollution and the quality of life.
Other projects such as the Tema Mpakadan Railway project, Eastern railway line, among others, are also currently ongoing.
The President’s meeting with Dunn Kelley forms part an official trip to South Africa where President Akufo-Addo is attending a business forum organised by the Africa Development Bank.
President Akufo-Addo will also attend another event christened, Invest in Africa Space, where he would meet and hold discussions with investors and business owners to get them to invest in Ghana.
He was accompanied by Joe Ghartey, as well as, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The President is expected back home Tuesday, November 12, 2019.
Meanwhile, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is acting in his stead as stated by the country’s constitution.
