Former Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has thrown his support to the debate as to whether the region prefers airports to fishing harbours at the coastal stretch of the region.

In justifying his conviction, he claims explained that the Accra-Cape Coast trunk road has become a death trap for commuters and that alone calls for an airport to be built in the Region.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as part of his tour to the region reiterated his promise to build an international airport in the Central Region capital of Cape Coast.

He told the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Council, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, that all is set for the takeoff of the project as feasibility studies are near completion.

This has sparked a debate as to whether a coastal and agricultural region would prefer an airport to a harbor.

Reacting to the issue on 3FM’s Sunrise on Tuesday hosted by Alfred Ocansey, Mr. Allotey Jacobs who has been sacked from the NDC said “the people will prefer an airport to harbor because Cape Coast to Accra road has become a death trap”.

“There are a lot of accidents on the road and being a tourist destination, what Cape Coast needs is an airport and I am happy it is closer to my farms. It has been demarcated”.

Mr. Allotey Jacobs noted that “even the fishermen will prefer an airport. Where are you going to construct the fishing harbor? Cape Coast will prefer an airport that will promote tourism in the Region”.

According to him, one other reason the region needs an airport is the traffic situation on the main Accra-Cape Coast road.

“Passing through Budumburam on weekends will take you several hours. You get to Mankessim and it is also another headache. If the road had dual carriage, it’s beautiful but the reason is to promote the tourism of the central region. So that it will attract people from the diaspora”.
