AMA PM calls on Assembly Members to own Green Ghana initiative

The Presiding Member (PM) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei has called on all Assembly Members to own the Green Ghana Initiative by actively participating in it to ensure a sustainable environment and improved climate for the future and present generations.
The Hon. member who said this on Friday, June 10, 2022, in an interview with the media on the sidelines of the Assembly’s session during the planting exercise which started at the Bank of Ghana triangle and ended at Accra Academy Senior High School was with the Chief Executive of Accra, honourable Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Head of Administration, AMA and some other key officials of the Assembly.
The Presiding Member also used the medium to appreciate the effort of his Excellency the President and other relevant stakeholders for making it possible for such a good initiative to take place to secure a greener future for all Ghanaians emphasizing that to ensure a successful initiative, the tree planting exercise was to be crowned with active follow up measures like watering etc. to prolong the lifespans of the little trees planted.
“Planting the trees is not as difficult as maintaining them. It is relatively more important to maintain them by watering, pruning, and manuring to ensure that the core vision of this mission is achieved,” he said.
“We are doing this today because we want a greener environment for a healthy human capital today and tomorrow…So if we plant them and leave them at the mercy of the weather to slowly die, what have we achieved as a city and a country? We will be back to square one and that will be a waste of time and resources but that is not what we want, which is why we are calling on all stakeholders and Ghanaians at large to play their part in making sure the small trees we are planting today live to protect the future generation,” he added.
He mentioned that the Assembly members were the managers of the respective electoral areas and as such had taken it upon themselves to help green their respective electoral areas by leading their residents to plant trees in all open spaces.
He however reiterated to the Assembly members that they should not only be concerned about the planting but rather be more concerned about maintaining them.
“I want to use this opportunity to encourage all Assembly Members in the 262 MMDCEs to be fully involved not just in planting the trees but also to ensure that each one of these small trees are maintained: watered, pruned and all… so that at the end of the day the Green Ghana Project will be sustainable,” he said.
The Presiding Member also revealed that some NADMO staff had been trained to educate stechnical men to ensure that the trees that have been planted will see the light of the day.
Honourable Alfred Okoh Vanderpuije, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South who was also present in a remark said planting trees promotes a better environment for all and cleaner air to breathe and therefore stressed the need for everyone regardless of political affiliations to take this initiative seriously to preserve the environment of the only country we all hold allegiance to through tree planting.
He thanked the Honourable mayor of Accra, honourable Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey for the opportunity to work together with her and the other Assembly Members of the various MMDCEs to preserve the future of mother Ghana.
In his closing remark, he recalled how the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources last year called on all Parliamentarians to participate in the Green Ghana Project and how the Parliamentarians honoured that call adding that they were very committed to the project and always ready to offer their support for the good of the various constituencies and the good of mother Ghana.
“This is the only nation we have and have the responsibility to preserve it for our children. Our parents took care of it, that is why we have it now and we have the responsibility to work together as men and women of influence to hand it over to our future generation in a better shape than it was given to us,” he said.
