Public sector workers lament delay in payment of February salaries

“We would have expected that even without prompting from the leadership of the various workers’ unions, the government itself would have initiated some great news to lessen the effect of this economic hardship on the Ghanaian worker, especially when there have not been any upward adjustments.”

Some public sector workers in the country are lamenting the undue delay in the payment of their salaries for February.

According to them, the situation has placed a huge financial burden on their shoulders leading to anxiety among some of them.

With the Akufo-Addo led government struggling with its finances, the workers fear the situation may linger on for some time.

The delay is coming at time fuel prices, transport fares and prices of goods and services have seen an upward adjustment.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, also predicted last week that government may not be able to pay salaries for the next three months if nothing is done immediately.

“This is not to discourage the committee from doing their work. If something is not done within the next three months, the government may not be able to pay salaries,” he said.

At a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, two teacher unions, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), questioned the delay in the payment of salaries for February and urged the government to come clean on plans to remedy the situation.

“We would have expected that even without prompting from the leadership of the various workers’ unions, the government itself would have initiated some great news to lessen the effect of this economic hardship on the Ghanaian worker, especially when there have not been any upward adjustments.”
