The embattled Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, faces mounting pressure as outraged youth from Kwahu petition the Queen Mother and Adontenhene, demanding punitive measures to restore the dignity of the Kwahu Traditional Council.

The controversy surrounding Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II stems from his resignation as Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) following allegations of abuse of power and misconduct. His resignation came after the Bank of Ghana (BoG) directed his removal, citing reputational damage caused by the scandal.

In a letter dated October 10, the Bank of Ghana stated that the chief’s “continued holding of office as a Director of ADB has become untenable due to the irreparable damage these events have caused to the image of the bank.”

After the news of the misconduct of the Kwahumanhene as ADB Board Chair went viral, the youth say it has tarnished the dignity and reputation of all Kwahus, the Traditional Council, and the stool he occupies.

Clad in red and black attires on Saturday, October 12, 2023, the youth presented a petition to the Queen Mother demanding that necessary actions be taken to restore the dignity of the Kwahu Traditional Council.

The angry youth further gave an ultimatum that the Queen Mother and Adontenhene must act on the matter within the next 7 days else they will use constitutional and customary processes to address their demand.

“We are affected as the youth of Kwahu and anticipate the same for all people of Kwahu descent everywhere, as such aspersions have and will continue to dent our highly built reputations as respected Kwahus in the eyes of right-thinking Ghanaians both at home and around the globe,” parts of the petition read.

They added, “We hope that Nananom [Traditional leaders] can expedite action on this in the next 7 days without any further delays.”

The Queen Mother, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III, acknowledged the petition and promised to investigate the matter swiftly.

“Thank you for your good intentions and for bringing this issue to my attention. If God permits, I will not rest until it is resolved. I will let you know the outcome. I haven’t heard from my son yet, but wherever he is, he will return, and I will speak with him to understand the details. I assure you, you will hear from me soon,” she said.
