Youth of Anlo District in the Volta Region have issued a threat to stage a massive demonstration against the Akufo-Addo led government over the abandoned Shime road project.
According to the youth, the road at Shime which serves as a major linking to several farming communities has been abandoned for the past three years.
The road, according to Joseph Agbeko Kpogo, who is the Leader of the Youth, was awarded on contract by the previous government under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama but has since been abandoned.
He said, initially the Akufo-Addo government claimed it was undertaking audit on road contracts awarded by the previous administration which was why the project stalled.
However, information gathered by the youth, indicate that, the Roads and Highways Minister, Amoako Atta, has since cleared the Shime road contract to be genuine. They wondered why the Contractor has still not returned to site.
Agbeko told Ghananewsonline.com.gh in an interview on Tuesday that, several complaints by residents to the government through the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the completion of the road have proved futile.
He said the DCE kept on assuring residents but nothing has been done over the past three years.
“The Youth will have no option than to stage a protest in the coming weeks to register our concerns,” he stated.
He noted that though the Shime road is not the only abandoned road project in the Anlo District, they believe when the construction of that road is completed, it would enhance the transportation challenges the people face daily when accessing their farms, health centres and other places.
He said the only way the government could take their plight serious is to stage a protest so the road which he described as “economic road” could be fixed.
While issuing the threat of demonstration, the youth leader demanded to know when the contractor would return to the project site.
The Shime road project was awarded to GHACOS LTD, in 2015/2016 for completion in 32 months, but has since been abandoned after the change in government in 2017.
