In a scathing disapproval, a group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) loyalists have expressed utter dismay and strong disapproval over the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the new head of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), describing it as a slap in the face of party faithful and loyalists.
According to them, the President’s choice of Anthony Sarpong is shocking and disappointing, as Sarpong has direct ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The group notably pointed out that, Sarpong was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to serve on the board of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), in September 2020, making him unfit for the current administration’s “resetting Ghana” agenda.

“It has become pressingly necessary for us to issue this press statement in utter disappointment of the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for the role of Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) – His Excellency has proven beyond doubt that he is a man who is poised to work in the interest of Ghanaians and to ensure that there is an equal distribution of his selection of appointees or nominations for critical offices of public service,” the group asserted, while echoing calls for the swift revocation of Sarpong’s appointment.
The NDC loyalists also praised the President for the challenging tasks he has successfully undertaken over the past 14 days, highlighting his dedication to fulfilling his promises to the people of Ghana.
They acknowledged the significant efforts and determination President Mahama has demonstrated in addressing key issues and delivering on his commitments, further acknowledging that the President has made some of the best choices for various sectors and continues to do so for several corporations and state institutions.
However, the group emphasized the concerns of numerous NDC loyalists, who have put in their sweat and blood to secure the party’s significant victory in the 2024 elections, echoing calls for their concerns to be addressed, hoping that those who have brought the NDC to this pivotal point in its political journey will be adequately rewarded and not overlooked or sidestepped for any reason.
The statement also indicated that recognizing and appreciating the efforts of these dedicated individuals is crucial for the party’s continued success and unity.
Furthermore, the NDC loyalists noted that Sarpong has served alongside other known NPP-aligned figures such as Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, the head of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), describing the development as troubling.

The group believes that this distinguished political appointment should have gone to one of the many experienced NDC members who have dedicated themselves to the party’s success, particularly in securing the decisive 2024 election victory, which is also reflective in the overwhelming representation of the party in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
Furthermore, the NDC loyalist group demanded that the President urgently considers the revocation of Anthony Sarpong’s appointment, warning that failure to do so would result in significant and unpalatable protests from their members.
They reiterated their profound disappointment and disgust with the appointment emphasizing the gravity of their concerns and the potential consequences of ignoring their demands.
“We must state that the confidence, high expectations, and nationwide trust that Ghanaians have reposed in President Mahama and in this NDC administration is something we are all happy about, and would not intentionally wish to mar, but if such moves, as what has happened at the GRA persists, we will be pushed to the wall to do so,” they warned, signalling their resolve in ensuring that the President and the NDC succeeds in restoring dignity and progress to the good people of Ghana.
According to the group, the dedicated NDC members who tirelessly worked both in the field and behind the scenes to bring the party back to power cannot stand by and accept this decision, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and valuing the efforts of those who have contributed significantly to the party’s success.
Accordingly, the NDC loyalists maintained that the party and therefore President Mahama must ensure that their dedication is not overlooked. “There are other people more deserving of this than this NPP-stained person known as Anthony Kwasi Sarpong.”
This call by the NDC loyalists highlights the concerns of many party faithful, who are poised to ensure that the current administration’s appoints the right and qualified persons, especially NDC loyalists who have given their all to get the party back into power, ensuring that the NDC’s agenda to reset the country and bring it back onto the path of progress and rapid development is not thwarted by perceived or known NPP elements who are only bent on seeing the NDC fail in restoring this beloved country to its former glory.
