The Association of Liberal Muslims-Ghana has condemned recent comments made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Dr. Prempeh, during a campaign event in Kumasi-Bantama, claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), under the leadership of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, had developed a curriculum that introduced Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) with LGBTQ+ content for school children.

He also alleged that Muslim Imams and church leaders were tasked with influencing teachers to teach the curriculum.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 10 October signed by the association’s Founding President, Alhaji Umar Harris, the Liberal Muslims called Dr. Prempeh’s assertions “misguided” and demanded an immediate retraction and apology.

“This baseless accusation against our noble Imams is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of Muslims and a mockery of our noble religion,” the statement said.

The association challenged Dr. Prempeh to “categorically mention the names of those Imams” he alleged were involved.

The group emphasised that CSE is designed to provide accurate information about human development and healthy relationships, rejecting any attempt to link it to LGBTQ+ ideologies.

It further stated that Dr. Prempeh’s accusations were contributing to a “growing climate of homophobia” in Ghana and urged him to “retract the blasphemous statements and render an unqualified apology to our Imams and Muslims in Ghana.”

The Association of Liberal Muslims called on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is a Muslim, to caution his running mate against making disrespectful comments towards the Muslim community.

The association also urged political leaders to focus on truth and transparency, rather than “fabricating controversies for political gain.”
