Arrest Wontumi TV Presenter for Misinformation on 2024 Election Dates – NDC demands

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the arrest of Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a presenter on Wontumi Radio/TV, for allegedly spreading false information about the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.

During a recent broadcast, Nana Asiedu made bizarre claims that the presidential election would be conducted over multiple days. He asserted that on December 7, voters would cast their ballots only for candidates at the top of the ballot paper, including the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Dr. Bawumia is number one on the ballot, so on December 7, we are going to vote for him first. We will vote for the first seven candidates on the ballot, then on subsequent days, we’ll vote for the rest, starting from number eight,” he claimed in Twi.

Asiedu further alleged that voters who failed to participate in the December 7 voting for Dr. Bawumia would be barred from voting for other candidates in the following days.

“So, on December 7, we vote for Dr. Bawumia. After that, maybe the next day or two, we vote for the second candidate, then the third on another day. If you don’t vote for Dr. Bawumia on December 7, you won’t be allowed to vote for anyone else later,” he claimed, attributing this alleged arrangement to the Electoral Commission and police.

NDC Responds

Reacting to the broadcast, Twum Barima, a member of the NDC’s communication team, expressed outrage during an interview on Accra FM. He accused the presenter of deliberately misleading the public and called for swift action by the police.

“This is deliberate misinformation aimed at confusing Ghanaians about the election process,” Barima said. “I was at a program with IGP Dampare, and he emphasized how much he frowns upon misinformation. If the police administration has heard this, they must arrest this idiot immediately.”
Barima further criticized the NPP, suggesting the remarks reflected desperation ahead of the 2024 elections.

Public Reaction

The remarks by the Wontumi TV presenter have sparked widespread condemnation, with many accusing him of undermining public confidence in the electoral process. Critics on social media have labeled the claims as reckless and called for sanctions to deter similar incidents.
The Electoral Commission has yet to issue a statement addressing the claims. Meanwhile, the police have been urged to investigate the matter promptly to preserve the integrity of the electoral process.
