Asamoah Gyan’s return: We cant take anyone who isn’t playing for any club – Charles Taylor
“A fit and firing Gyan will have a free ride to the World Cup but let’s ask what he is training for. I don’t think any competent coach will entertain this. We can’t take someone who is not playing for any club.”
Former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak forward Charles Taylor says Asamoah Gyan’s desire to return to the Black Stars should be dismissed because the striker has been out of action for a long time.
Gyan stated his desire to return to the Black Stars and be a part of the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in a recent BBC interview.
Gyan said that he was determined to return to full fitness after being inactive for a year due to injuries sustained while playing Legon Cities.
The 36-year-old last played for the Black Stars in 2019.
Reacting to Gyan’s interview, Taylor said on Agel FM, “We have regular fitness and match fitness. Even those who get injured and return struggle to hit the ground running.”
“We are not talking about history; we’re looking at current performance. He has done his bit for the country.
“A fit and firing Gyan will have a free ride to the World Cup but let’s ask what he is training for. I don’t think any competent coach will entertain this. We can’t take someone who is not playing for any club.”
Gyan has scored a record 51 goals for Ghana.
