The ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Women’s Organiser, Kate Gyamfua, has hinted at the likely running mate of the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to her, the party has already decided on the suitable partner and has accordingly informed the flagbearer of the decision.

Madam Gyamfua stated on Peace FM on November 22, 2023 that the party’s pick is a male Member of Parliament (MP) from the Ashanti Region.

When quizzed if this meant that individuals aspiring to the job who are not MPs should give up their hopes, she drew a parallel to the past, saying that varied perspectives existed prior to the election of Vice President Bawumia.

The Women’s Organiser’s claims tie in with the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu’s call for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to select his running mate from the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Osei-Owusu recently told JoyNews that the running mate for the party’s flagbearer will be chosen from the Ashanti Region.

This, according to the Bekwai MP, who is also rumoured to be the running mate, is the only way for the party to win the 2024 general election.

“It is generally agreed in the party that if Bawumia wins, his running mate should come from the Ashanti Region,” he said.

When asked if Dr. Bawumia had agreed to the deal, he said, “I think so.”

Already some NPP MPs have positioned themselves to be selected to partner Dr. Bawumia.

So far, the names of the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, have emerged.

Other potential running mates include Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communication, and Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah.

The First Deputy Speaker stated that the ideal candidate for the role should have qualities such as integrity and command respect both inside and beyond the party to complement the new leader.
