President Addo Dankwa Nana Akufo-Addo has described the current government as accommodating of protestations and dissenting opinions expressed through demonstrations as opposed to the erstwhile NDC government.

According to the president, the peaceful demonstrations in Tamale among other protests is indicative of a “new era” where persons that picket are not subjected to brutality.

“Let me state a Ghanaian irony. Five years ago, we had demonstrations in Accra calling for a new, credible register, in which some citizens were maimed.

“Today, we are having peaceful denominations in Tamale, this time protesting against the decision of the Electoral Commission, whose constitutional remit it is to compile an electoral register, to have now a new, improved register. Fortunately in this era, there are no casualties,” he stated.

The president posted this via social media, addressing the ongoing fierce opposition against the move by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 general elections.
