Ayawaso North: MCE hails Akufo-Addo’s achievements in infrastructure development

The Chief Executive of Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly (ANMA), Aminu Mohammed Zakaria, has expressed gratitude to the President Nana Akufo-Addo for his achievements since he took over as President of the country. Some of the achievements also include the creation of ANMA to develop the communities.

The creation of the Municipality in 2018, he said, would improve the living conditions of the residents through the mobilization of human, material and financial resources and provision of basic amenities, infrastructure and essential facilities.

Mohammed Zakaria said this on Tuesday at the meet-the-Press series organized by Ministry of Information and the Local Government to outline the achievements of the assembly and ongoing developmental projects.

On the issue of education he said the Assembly is undertaking the construction of a Six unit dormitory at the Accra Girls Senior High funded by the GETFUND, renovation of 12 unit 2 storey classroom block at Unity cluster of schools as well as the fencing of the school.

He mentioned other ongoing projects to include fabrication and supply of dual desks for some selected schools, supply of teachers furniture for both the Senior and Junior High schools, supply of some 32 round tables to three kindergarten schools within the municipality, among others.

“The Assembly has supplied 118 chairs, 80 mono desks, 271 dual desks and 29 cupboards to 5 basic schools in the municipality,” he added.

Water and Sanitation

According to the MCE, the Assembly has developed a Municipal Environment Strategic Action Plan (MESSAP) to complement the sanitation bye-laws to achieve the President’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

“As Local Government Authority, we are pushing and working hard for that vision to succeed,” he noted.

He indicated that, the assembly has signed onto the One Million Bin project, dubbed “One Household One Bin” (1H1B) in which waste bins would be supplied to the assembly for distribution to registered households as a responsive action to curb the sanitation challenges within the communities.

“About 800 waste bins were delivered to the assembly and 500 has being distributed to the registered households in the area,” he opined.

The MCE outlined other exercises the assembly is undertaking like the monthly cleanup exercise to de-silt choke drains, about 87 household toilets under construction under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Assembly (GAMA) project, out of which 30 was subsidized by the assembly, establishment of the Ayawaso North Voluntary Sanitation Taskforce as watchdogs among others.

“We have revisited the old concept to summon residents who violates the sanitation bye-laws of the assembly. They embark on weekly inspections throughout the municipality. We are also benefiting from the 1 constituency 1 million dollar programme through the construction ofthree institutional toilets, and boreholes in the municipality,” the MCE stated.

On Agriculture

In addressing agriculture, the Chief Executive said the assembly is strongly collaborating with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to acquire farmlands outside Accra to invest using labour from within the municipality.

“We also poised to taking advantage of Government’s rearing for Food and Jobs programme to enhance the lives of the residents and boost agriculture in the municipality,” he said.

He hinted that 15 farmers have already being registered and awaiting the supply of cockerels from MOFA under the Rearing for Food and Jobs, adding that, the assembly has also in the process of acquiring structures for training of the youth in rabbit rearing.

Infrastructure

Touching on infrastructure, the MCE indicated that several infrastructure projects are underway such as upgrading of the markets to modern and complex structures, construction of drains to prevent flooding, Alley pavings in 3 electoral areas, U-drains Akotex extension and pavements.

Roads

According to the Chief Executive, the municipality is faced with some challenges and bad roads including over speeding and therefore the assembly has undertaken road construction works such as potholes patching, construction of ramps and asphalting to minimize the challenges in the municipality.

Security

Mohammed Zakari disclosed that though the municipality remains peaceful, the assembly is determined to illuminate the area by providing street lights at all corners and community to combat crime and other related activities.

“the assembly has replaced the over 500 faulty lights on the streets and also collaborating with District Police Command to ensure there is adequate police visibility including construction of Police Post at vantage points within the municipality,” he added.

Health

The MCE claimed the assembly is collaborating with the municipal health Directorate to promote quality healthcare delivery in the area with the renovation and construction of 3 storey Doctor’s bungalow at maamobi General Hospital, health screening and training to food vendors, vaccination against Polio and Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) among others.

Scholarships

He again noted that the assembly has collaborated with the Scholarship Secretariat and offered scholarship to 32 students pursuing courses in various forms like Diploma, HND, Degree and Masters programmes in the tertiary institutions.

“The assembly has also supported 28 needy but brilliant students in paying their tuition fees, we hope to do more in the next academic year,” he said.

The MCE further touched on street addressing system, Free Senior High policy. MASLOC and the National Builders Corps which have help in diverse ways to improve the living conditions of residents and its citizens as a whole.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to come in their numbers and vote ‘yes’ in the referendum that would determine the election of MMCEs on partisan basis during the elections of Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members for the MMDAs.
