The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the annulment of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by election.
In a statement, it described the whole election, which recorded a 19% turnout after gun violence had forced the NDC to withdraw from the election, as a sham.
“We call on the Electoral Commission Chairperson to annul the result of the by-election,” the statement said.
In the same statement, notice was served that the newly elected MP for the area, Lydia Seyram Alhassan will not be recognized as such by the NDC.
The opposition party also called for full investigations to be conducted into the gun violence at the by-election and the perpetrators brought to book. “Failure to do this, we in the NDC will have no other option but to meet the NPP boot for boot in any election the Jean Mensah led EC will conduct under the NPP and Nana Akufo-Addo government,” the statement said,
Some 18 people sustained various degrees of injury when masked gun men attired in National Security apparels stormed La Bawaleshie to shoot at unarmed civilians during the by-election. At least one person is feared to have been maimed.
The attacks led to the NDC withdrawing from the race.
