Bagbin’s Behavior Towards Kwaku Afriyie Is A “Major Threat” To Ghana’s Democracy – Kwamena Duncan

Dr. Afriyie had said; “With all due respect to your chair, this preliminary remarks you are making are presidential and I believe that as representing the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said.”

Kwamena Duncan has vehemently descended on the Speaker of Parliament for marshalling the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, out of the House during proceedings on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin described some statements by Dr. Kwaku Afriyie very disrespectful and angrily instructed the Marshall to walk him out.

This happened after Dr. Kwaku Afriyie challenged the Speaker saying the latter’s comments on an LGBTQ+ issue which is before the Supreme Court were prejudicial.

Dr. Afriyie had said; “With all due respect to your chair, this preliminary remarks you are making are presidential and I believe that as representing the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said.”  

In response to the comment, Speaker Bagbin said; “This is a completely rude remark and I can send you out of the House. It lies in my authority to do so. I represent the whole country, you represent the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso. Please Marshal take him out of the House, I will not entertain such disrespect.”

Reacting to the Speaker’s action during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, the former Minister for Central Region, Kwamena Duncan found nothing disrespectful about the MP’s remarks.

“That definition of gross disorder…is it the Speaker who makes that definition? And that the point made by Kwaku Afriyie that this doesn’t lie in your mouth, does it constitute gross disorder?”, he questioned.

He concluded that this behavior by the Speaker is “a major threat to democracy”.
