Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the public to sign up for the digital payment systems using the Universal Quick Response (QR) Code and Proxy Pay system.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, hit the street of Accra on Thursday, November 19, 2020, to formally outdoor the Universal Quick Response (QR) Code and Proxy Pay system.
As part of this, he set the tone by buying waakye with the digital payment system from a local vendor.
According to the Vice President, the QR Code makes it possible for all merchants, service providers, and institutions to receive payments from bank accounts, e-zwich accounts, mobile money wallets, or internationally issued visas or MasterCards instantly.

Speaking with the media, he urged everyone to subscribe to the digital payment system because it is accessible to everyone.
“I expect big things for Ghana, going forward, and we are riding on the rails of the Mobile Money Interoperability. Everybody should look to using the QR code, download whatever application. What is important is that, even if you don’t have a smartphone, you can use the system. It works both for smartphone and the ‘yam’ phones to make payments.”
In March 2020, the proxy pay platforms were launched as part of the government’s plans to ensure cashless payments to enhance digital payments. It is said to be a cost-effective way of payment which will among other things allow for mass participation.
The Universal QR Code solution works like a barcode at shops and supermarkets where buyers can scans the displayed QR code to make payments.
