The effects of the closure of Beach Resorts and Entertainment Centers in Ghana

Operators of night clubs, beach resorts and pubs across the country are still counting their loses as the presidential directive to close down these places remains in force.

Many of these recreational centres which hither to used to bustle with various activities with many people thronging these places to either buy drinks, relax, listen to music, take a nap or whirl away time have since become deserted places following the presidential directive necessitated by the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic which shook the whole world in 2019.

Many of the operators and managers of these businesses have had to resort to other forms of businesses in order to continue to earn a livelihood and take care of their dependants as the directive has taken a toll on their incomes.

Ghananewsonline.com.gh in a company of a team of journalists took a tour of some of these places along the Tema-Sakumono beach way and stopped by one of the most popular clubs in the area – Queens View Beach Club owned by Mr King Law. We spoke with the manager in charge – Henry Clottey, who was sitting idle and listening to music on a late Friday afternoon at the time our team got there. Hitherto, he would have been very busy supervising his numerous staff who would have been serving a lot of revelers who are getting themselves ready for the weekend.

Henry disclosed to us that they have had to shut down the place and lay-off most of their staff as there was no way the workers could be paid when they were out of business. He said before the presidential directive, the place was bustling with over 16 workers but only two of them are currently at post just to ensure that the place is cleaned and secured.

He appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to consider easing the restrictions to allow for businesses of their type to reopen. It was his suggestion that with a strict and rigorous supervision there would be adherence to all the Covid-19 safety protocols.

He said this will lessen the current economic hardships the operators and workers of these recreational places are going through.

Some have described these beaches, night clubs, pubs and their likes as essential service providers because their contributions to reducing stress on the ordinary worker cannot be underated. Indeed, those are the places many people go to reduce stress from the office and to wait for vehicular traffic to subside.
