Biotech expert debunks GMO health risks

A Senior Research Scientist at the Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute, Dr. Daniel Osei Ofosu,  has debunked rumors suggesting that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) pose negative health effects on consumers.

In an interview with the media, Dr. Ofosu explained all GMOs before being released to the market passes through rigorous regulatory framework to ensures their safety for human consumption.

According to him, consumers can have confidence in the safety of GMOs as the regulatory process involves rigorous testing for potential allergens, toxins, and other potential risks to ensures that only the safest GMOs reach the market.

“GMOs undergo extensive testing and evaluation before they are approved for use in agriculture or food production.

“These regulations are in place to ensure that GMOs meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy. As a result, the scientific consensus is clear: GMOs are safe for consumers.” He said

Dr. Daniel Osei Ofosu, made this revelation during a media engagement at Kintampo to enlighten them about GMOs especially the newly released Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) Cowpea seed nd its benefit to the society.

He disclosed that, although the Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) Cowpea seed, popularly known as Songotra T is Ghana’s first commercially approved Genetically modified organisms, it is not the first GMO in the world as there are a lot of GMOs across the world and there has not been a single complain of any of the existing GMOs

“Ghana is not the only country that is producing GMOs, it is produced worldwide, personally, I have eaten GMOs from many countries and nothing bad has happened to me because there is nothing bad about GMOs.

“The truth is, there are a lot of regulations that GMOs passes through before it can come out to the market, so I want people to understand that we are not producing anytime that will harm Ghanaians.” He said
