Breaking: Akufo-Addo government makes ‘election week’ promotions in Police Service

The Herald has picked up reports from the Ghana Police Service that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Oppong Boanuh has on the orders of President Nana Akufo-Addo made some promotions.

Details are sketchy but this paper is informed that the promotions of junior ranks are to take effect yesterday, Tuesday 1st December 2020.

The junior ranks had been promoted from the existing ranks to the next rank.

The promotions come just a few days after the government increased the salaries of the Police Officers with the flagbearer of the National Democratci Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama describing the payments as an inducement.

For instance, all inspectors had been promoted to the rank of Chief Inspectors while Lance Corporals have been promoted to full Corporals.

It’s not clear how long the issue of the Promotions had been on the discussion table waiting for approval, but many officers feel the massive promotion is part of the election week inducements.

Some also see the appointments as a panic reaction to reports that the exit polls on the Special Voting exercise on Tuesday by some of the security agencies, did not look good for the government hence the sudden promotions.

More to come
