Bribery gone wrong as Fishermen in Elmina rejects Hawa Koomson’s Goodies

Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson was booed and chased away by angry fishermen in Elmina where she had gone to donate food items.

The items including rice, oil and other stuff packed in pick-up vans were flung back at her by the peeved fishermen who claimed the Minister considered them cheap.

According to media reports, the anger of fishermen also stems from the minister enforcing strict regulations disallowing the fisherfolks to undertake light fishing after the main fishing period had closed.

The fishermen claim the policy is oblivious to the fact that huge fishing trawlers from China are taking advantage of this restriction to takeover Ghana’s fishing resources.

According to the fishermen, a ban on light fishing akin to a hunger for them since that’s the only activity they survive on.

Videos seen by Whatsup News show the minister’s entourage desperately trying to convince the angry fishermen to take the goods being donated to them, but the people stood their ground and refused.

The Minister and her team had no choice but to pack the items back into a waiting pick-up truck and zoom off in disgrace.

This is the second time in less than a week that items donated by a government official has been rejected by the people.

Recently angry youth in Busunu in the West Gonja Municipality rejected some bags of rice sent to them by the Member of Parliament of Damongo Constituency, Samuel Abu Jinapor for the celebration of Eid-Ul-Adha festivities.

They chased the former Deputy Chief of Staff off with his donated rice, saying they wanted sustainable jobs and not freebies.
