Brouhaha over New Voters’ Register: ‘we will flog EC boss like a horse’ – NDC Communicator

Member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Communications Team, Kingsly Haruna Amaliba has said the party will flog Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensah if she turns a deaf-ear to the party’s demand of not creating a new voters’ register.

According to him, the EC Boss’ entrenched position on not creating a new voters’ register comes as a shock to many Ghanaians including members of his party and other political parties as well as other organised groups.

Haruna Amaliba made the statement Thursday on Atinka Tv’s Morning Show, Ghana Nie, hosted by Bismark Brown.

The communicator maintained that a few days after the District Assembly elections, the public relations officer of the commission, Mrs. Sylvia Annor was reported to have said the Voters’ register was 95% credible and fit for the purpose and so he is therefore surprised at the EC’s sudden u- turn.

He added, the ‘actions of the EC’s Chairperson only created room and doubts and speculations’, thus the NDC and will not take it lightly on the EC Boss if she fails to heed and give into the demands of the ‘majority’ of Ghanaians.

In furtherance, Haruna Amaliba likened the EC Boss to a horse which only does the right thing when it is whip.

Touching on the calls by the EC’s Eminent Advisory Committee for the public to remain calm while the EC under takes it constitutional mandate, the Communicator opined the 21- man EC committee is predisposed since northerners are not duly represented on that committee.

He said the north plays a pivotal role in the electioneering process of the country and it unclear why it was exempted.

On  Monday, 6 January,  Opposition’s political parties staged  a mammoth demonstration in Tamale against EC’s decision to compile a new voters register.

Meanwhile, Haruna Amaliba said the largest opposition Party NDC and other smaller parties under the umbrella, inter party resistance against new voters register  made their message clear ‘justification by the EC for new voters roll is unacceptable.’

The Electoral Commission (EC) since then has stressed  and maintained the need for the compilation of new voters register for the upcoming general election adding that the exercise is not a waste of resources.

The EC in its quest to compile a new voters’ register said it is committed to judiciously spending the about GH¢400 million it was granted by Parliament to be spent on the process.
