CAF flags to fly at half-mast for five days in honour of Hayatou
Hayatou, who served CAF as President for almost three decades, died on Thursday, August 8 in Paris, France.
The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has requested that all flags of member associations fly at half-mast as a tribute to former President Issa Hayatou.
This gesture is scheduled to end on Tuesday, August 13.
Hayatou, who served CAF as President for almost three decades, died on Thursday, August 8 in Paris, France.
The Cameroonian had led several reforms in African football and was credited to have contributed to the hosting of the World Cup in Africa for the first time in 2010.
Dr Motsepe expressed deepest “personal” condolences and those of all the 54 member associations to the family of the late former football administrator.
“CAF and African football will forever be grateful to President Hayatou for his enormous and far-reaching contributions, over many years to the development and growth of football in Africa.
“He will forever live in our hearts and minds.”
Under Hayatou, Ghana co-hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and hosted the tournament again in 2008.
The country’s maiden qualification to the World Cup in 2006 was also during Hayatou’s Presidency.
