Captain Andre Ayew sets Ghana record

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew on Thursday became Ghana’s most capped player as he made his 110th appearance in the 2-0 win over Switzerland in a pre-World Cup friendly played in Abu Dhabi.

Ayew equaled Gyan’s record (109 appearances) in September when he came on as a substitute against Nicaragua, but he started against Switzerland, giving a great account of himself in what was a record-breaking match for him.

The 32-year-old has been one of Ghana’s most important players, having captained the satellites to glory in the 2009 African Championship and the World Cup.

The former Olympic Marseille player made his debut for the Black Stars at the age of 17 under coach Claude le Roy in a friendly match against Senegal in August 2007.

He was later included in the final squad for the 2008 African cup of Nations in Ghana and has since then been integral in virtually, every major tournament of the Black Stars.

While playing so many games for Ghana, the Al Sadd attacker has also been a force in front of goal for the Black Stars. He has scored 23 goals making him the seventh all-time top scorer for the Black Stars and the highest by any active Black Stars player.

With ten goals, Ayew is already Ghana’s highest scorer at the African Cup of Nations and also second behind Asamoah Gyan in World cup goals with two strikes.

He was one of the five top scorers in the .2015 African cup of nations as well as one of the eleven players to make the team of the tournament.

While playing for several clubs including Olympique Marseille and Swansea City, he won numerous individual awards, including the Olympique de Marseille Player of the Season in 2011, Swansea City Players’ Player of the Season and Swansea City Supporters’ Player of the Season in 2019-20

He was also named the BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2011 and The CAF Team of the Year: in 2010, 2011 and 2015.
