Chale Wote Festival Commences Next Week

The festival founded in 2011 by Accra-based artist Mantse Aryeequaye will be held for the 13th time this year at Independence Square, Black Star Gate and at Fort Christianborg in the Osu area of Accra from August 19 – 25, 2024.

This year’s edition of one of Africa’s biggest annual arts festival, Chale Wote will commence on Monday, September 19, 2024.

The festival founded in 2011 by Accra-based artist Mantse Aryeequaye will be held for the 13th time this year at Independence Square, Black Star Gate and at Fort Christianborg in the Osu area of Accra from August 19 – 25, 2024.

It brings together artists, musicians, performers, and community members to transform the streets of James Town into a vibrant and dynamic art space each year for celebrating the creativity of African artists.

The festival encompasses Street art and graffiti murals; Live music and DJ performances; Dance and theater performances; Fashion and costume displays; Food and drink vendors; Art exhibitions and installations; and Workshops and community engagement programs.

It will open on Monday with All White Procession at sunset. The aim is to announce the event and invite community members to participate in the festival.

The thirteenth edition is themed “And Now An End To The Empire Of Horrors,” drawing inspiration from some of Africa’s deepest history that lies in the Gulf of Guinea.

The festival which is also a major tourist attraction and a platform for talent exhibition will end on August 25.

The name “Chale Wote” is a Ghanaian Ga phrase that translates to “Man, let’s go!” or “Friend, let’s go!” in English.
