Chiana SHS girls’ dismissal not a political decision – Nsowah

The Chair of the GES Council, Michael Nsowah, says the decision to dismiss eight girls of Chiana Senior High School for insulting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was not political.
He says the turn events have taken since the sanctions were announced is what makes things seem political but the decision is in the manual of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
There has been mixed reaction over the decision by the Council to dismiss the students.
Many have described the decision as “too harsh”.
This resulted in the intervention of President Akufo-Addo on Friday, January 13.
The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, consequently, directed the GES to consider other alternative but corrective punishments.
But in an interview on TV3 on Friday, Mr Nsowah, who is a former Director General of the Service, insisted the decision was not outside the remit of the country’s education-supervisory body.
He said all within the ranks of discipline including the board and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Chiana SHS in the Kassena-Nankana West Municipality of the Upper East Region accepted the highest punitive measure of dismissal for the girls.
He insists that the President’s intervention makes the decision look political but it is not at all.
The Chair of the GES Council assured that the President’s letter will be considered and other alternatives including suspension will be considered.
