Chief Justice Advocates for More Supreme Court Judges Amid Rising Caseload
“The ruling is adjourned to July 17, 2024. We appreciate everyone’s patience, but our caseload remains substantial. Hence, the necessity for more Supreme Court judges,” she remarked.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has defended her recent request for additional Supreme Court judges, emphasizing the burgeoning caseload faced by the apex court.
In her closing statements following the hearings on lawsuits brought by Broadcast Journalist Richard Dela Sky and Researcher Dr Amanda Odoi against Parliament’s passage of the anti-gay bill, Chief Justice Torkornoo underscored the imperative of expanding the judicial bench.
“The ruling is adjourned to July 17, 2024. We appreciate everyone’s patience, but our caseload remains substantial. Hence, the necessity for more Supreme Court judges,” she remarked.
Her remarks follow a formal plea to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to nominate five judges to the Supreme Court of Ghana. The nominees, including Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botchwey and Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah, aim to strengthen the judiciary with their expertise and experience.
Justice Botchwey presided over the ambulance case involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, while Justice Homiah, alongside Justice Afia Asare Botwe, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Justice Eric Kyei Baffuour, represent a cadre of highly qualified legal professionals poised to contribute significantly to Ghana’s judicial system.
