‘Chris Hughton is a bad coach’ – Ghana FA Exco member

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo recently voiced strong criticism against Chris Hughton, deeming him a ‘bad coach’ in the aftermath of the Black Stars’ disappointing display at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast.

Appointed in March 2023, Hughton guided the team to the 34th edition of AFCON. Unfortunately, the Black Stars faced an early exit in the group phase for the second consecutive time, finishing third in Group B with a mere two points out of a possible nine.

Expressing his dissatisfaction on Asempa FM, Sarfo pointedly criticized Hughton’s tactics, asserting that they fell short of what the Black Stars required. “I don’t want to label Chris Hughton as a bad coach, but he wasn’t up to the task of coaching the Black Stars. His tactics were insufficient. He is a bad coach,” Sarfo remarked.

Following Hughton’s dismissal post-AFCON, the GFA promptly assembled a five-member committee entrusted with suggesting a new coach to the Executive Council. The committee’s responsibility includes identifying a suitable replacement capable of steering the team to success in upcoming tournaments.

The quest for a new coach is anticipated to be meticulous, with the GFA emphasizing the importance of appointing someone who can guide the Black Stars back to their position as one of Africa’s premier football teams.

Hughton’s departure has ignited discussions among Ghanaian football enthusiasts, eliciting diverse opinions about his coaching tenure. However, Sarfo’s remarks have stirred controversy, with some critics arguing that the assessment of Hughton’s abilities was excessively harsh.

Despite the scrutiny, the GFA remains steadfast in its determination to secure a fitting replacement for Hughton, aiming to rejuvenate the Black Stars and reclaim their stature as one of Africa’s elite football squads.
