Closure of Markets over Covid-19: Borrow ‘Double Track’ from Free SHS to run our Markets
A Journalist and Enterprenur, Selorm Kofi Adzivor, has suggested to government to borrow the double track system that is being used to run the Free Senior High School policy for the running of our markets. This he said would encourage feasible enforcement of ‘social distancing’.
According to the vociferous media practitioner, it is against fairness where some markets are opened while others remain closed, stressing that, “People within lockdown areas must also be allowed to have access to foodstuffs”……”where we have reasonable implementation strategies, confusion is avoided” he added.
Mr Adzivor holds the view that government must regulate social distancing in our markets by allowing traders to go and sell on shift bases same as the Free Senior High School double track strategy is working.
“With provision of enough PPE and the engagement of various Task Forces, we should not be bothered about the confusion we are all witnessing today,” he ghananewsonline.com.gh in an interview.
“The CMB market for example has been closed down. Most traders who ply thier business in there took loans which they have used to purchase goods before the lockdown was announced…Most of them are under pressure to pay back the loans they took and this is gradually affecting them” he further reiterated.
He says we should not see things happen this way to a point where citizens begin to choose between dying of hunger and the Covid-19 pandemic.
There has been widespread confusions amidst assaults on citizens over where to be allowed to go to and at which time. Ghana has declared a partial Lockdown in some of its regions following the outbreak of the pandemic.
A recent video captured by Citi TV revealed a damning scene from the Accra Brewery market. Traders at the said market defied lockdown protocols last night. Hundreds of them were seen trading in the night, with no social distancing or hygiene protocols in place.
As at today, April 18, the Ghana Health Service has confirmed a total of 834 cases across the country.
