Commercial drivers within the Accra Metropolis have began a campaign to get Ghanaians to vote ‘No’ in the upcoming Referendum.
The Referendum which is scheduled for December 17, 2019 will determine whether or not Ghanaians want the introduction of partisanship into Ghana’s local governance system.
But Concern Drivers Association, a driver group in the country, has said the way to go is for Ghanaians to vote ‘No’ in the upcoming Referendum to ensure that the local government system remain non-partisan.
Speaking to Kaakyire Appea-Apraku on Dwaboase on Power 97.9 FM, Spokesperson for the driver group, Yaw Barima, disclosed that they had, upon consultation, come to realize that voting ‘No’ will rather bring sanity into Ghana’s local governance architecture.
“We, as a group with hundreds of members, have started campaigning against the Referendum. We want Ghanaians to vote ‘no’ to prevent the dirty politics we have been witnessing over the years from entering our local government elections,” Mr. Barima explained.
He said they had began printing flyers to paste on their cars to campaign for ‘No’ votes, adding that they will educate their passengers if need be to get them to vote ‘No’ in the referendum.
Mr. Barima went on to argue that Article 55 (3) does not need to be changed based on a referendum but rather Parliamentarians can change the necessary clauses that will ensure that Metropilitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are elected on non-partisan lines for national cohession.
