Coronavirus: We want to come back home – Ghanaian students in China cry out

Ghanaian students in China, specifically Wuhan, the province at the centre of the outbreak of Coronavirus are demanding from Ghanaian authorities an immediate evacuation from the country following a shut down of the city.

The students say they have run out of food and would not be able to survive without moving out.

Wuhan chapter president of the Ghanaian Students Association, Sampson Opoku in an interview on Joy FM monitored by ABC News said there are currently 151 Ghanaian students currently ‘stranded’ in the city of Wuhan.

”Because of the outbreak, we have been forced to remain indoors. The city was actually locked down. No vehicular movements, No human movements. There was panic buying. Some of the students were able to buy some food items because they have the money and those who heard the information earlier. Some have started running short of food”

”We are 151 students in the city now, and for us, we want evacuation back home to Ghana because we don’t know how long this is going to take  When the outbreak subsides or ends then we return and continue our academic work. The number of cases and mortality rates increases each day so members are scared. We want to be evacuated back home,” he opined.

The National President of the Ghanaian students in China, Felix Gyawu Addo, however said Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Edward Boateng, is aware of the demands of the students and will be meeting the student leadership of Wuhan to discuss the issue and decide the best solution.

”Our members in Wuhan want to be evacuated and I have passed same information to the ambassador. They had a meeting today and they are meeting the Wuhan executives at 10 pm and this issue will be discussed thoroughly,” he said.
