Coup plot: ACP Agordzor to reappear in court on Friday
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr. Benjamin Agordzor, who is standing trial for his alleged involvement in the coup plot, is expected back in court on Friday, November 8, ABC News can report.
The court will on Friday, make a determination on an application filed by the lawyer of ACP Agorzor, Martin Kpebu, challenging the jurisdiction of the Kaneshie District Court to adjudicate on the matter brought before it.
Martin Kpebu contends that if the Court cannot grant his client bail, then it cannot also hear the case.
MartiN Kpebu has requested that the judge cede the case to a higher court on the basis that “The judge should not handle the case at all because usually from experience the judge will just remand the accused person till the next court sitting and then the defense counsel will be told that he should go to the High Court and all bail; can you imagine?
“So what they do is that every time, we will just come to the court and the judge will say go and lock him in remand and if you want bail, they say don’t come here, go to the High Court. So we are saying that if the judge cannot grant bail, then the judge also cannot have the power to be locking,” he argued in an interview with ABC News.
Dr. Benjamin Agordzor, who has been implicated in the alleged coup plot has been remanded in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
He has been charged with abetment to commit treason after it emerged that he uttered some comments on a WhatsApp platform, in which the alleged coup plotters were also part, and also allegedly gave some financial assistance to the coup plotters.
But the lawyer for the Policeman is unhappy that his client has been remanded insisting, “we are saying that the practice of bringing accused persons to court and remanding them is wrong.”
He noted that should the court reject their application, they will head to the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Dr. Agordzor, after the court proceedings Wednesday, swore to defend his name to the end of the matter, as he addressed the media.
“Nobody should involve me in any coup”, he told the media, pointing out that his so-called ‘Whatsapp connection’ to the alleged coup is baseless and unrelated, and “I’ll stand for this. I’ll stand for this till the end. They cannot break me down at all, and I’m as strong as anything. Thank you very much for your support, thank you very much, thank you”, he thundered, finally saluting his listeners even as his escorts prodded him it was enough and time to go while the media trailed him for more.”
