Covid-19: NGO supports Parents of Children with Special Needs with Shopping Vouchers

In the wake of the partial lockdown in parts of the country due to the novel Covid-19 pandemic, Dislabelled a social enterprises that works with Persons with Disabilities (PWD’s) has provided grocery vouchers worth GHC 17,250 to parents of children with special needs and Persons with Disabilities to purchase food and other necessities during this difficult period.

In a statement, Dislabelled an organization that seeks to reverse the notion that people with varying intellectual and physical changes are unable to be a productive part of the society stated that, when the lockdown was announced by government, as an organization they realised that it would be difficult for some of the people in their disability network to gain immediate funds for basic food items.

“In response…we launched our Covid-19 Grocery Voucher initiative as a first attempt to support them secure the necessities” the statement stated.

The statement also indicates that, over a hundred grocery vouchers were provided with each worth GHC 150, was made available to the beneficiaries through mobile money operators.

Dislabelled was established in 2013 with the main objective of making the lives of Persons with Disabilities count by reforming the special education system and seeking career opportunities for persons with disabilities through the provision of resources to support parents with children with disabilities.

The organization operates Parents’ Support, Practitioners and Teacher Development, Direct support for PWD’s and Mental Health Awareness and Support as its main pillars to create more conducive conditions for all Persons with Disabilities in the country.

“In addition to the grocery vouchers, the organization has lunched other initiatives in response to supporting the beneficiaries during the Covid -19 periods. Some of the initiatives include “Learn from Home Initiative” which provides the platform for special education teachers to deepen their knowledge of topics that are relevant to their practice” the statement added.

Dislabelled in collaboration with Pitch Hub will also organize a Virtual Masterclass on Business Success and Recovery strategies during and after the crises and an online reading and sensory activity for young persons with autism in conjunction with Booksie Box and Adjeley GH.
