COVID-19: UK records 1,200 more coronavirus deaths and 23,275 cases

Another 1,200 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, according to government figures.

It compares to 1,245 fatalities announced on Friday and 1,348 last Saturday and brings the total number of deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test to 105,571.

Britain has recorded more coronavirus deaths than any other country in Europe and has one of the highest COVID death rates in the world.

Meanwhile, a further 23,275 people have tested positive for the virus in the UK. That compares to 29,079 on Friday, and 33,552 last Saturday.

It brings the total number of cases to 3,796,088.

And 8,378,940 first vaccine doses have now been administered, with 480,432 second doses.

This is an increase of 2,178 on figures released the previous day.

The seven-day rolling average of first doses given in the UK is now 359,656.

Based on the latest figures, an average of 413,816 first doses of vaccine would be needed each day in order to meet the Government’s target of 15 million first doses by 15 February.
