Apart from politics, sports, and tourism management, Cuba has shown its aclaimed ‘notoriety’ (leadership) in medicine is not a fluke. It has once again risen to the expectation of many in the fight against the Corona Virus.

Information gathered shows the World Health Organization (WHO) has given a ‘category of excellence’ to the Cuban vaccine, Sovereign 2. The vaccine is said to be suitable for pediatric use also. A potency that none of the vaccines currently on the market has.

The Cuban Sovereign 2 will hit the ground running on the continent soon. It has managed to get on the selection list of vaccines of the World Health Organization (WHO), it is the first vaccine manufactured in Latin America that has passed phase 2 of clinical trials and it has a distinctive advantage over other vaccines in the market (it can be used in pediatric populations)

The vaccine entered the successive stages of testing in October last year and, as confirmed by the pharmaceutical company BioCubaFarma Medicos (CECMED), it is likely to go through the WHO cycle of testing by end of May this year after it was given the bill of health by the Regulatory Authority of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices to enter the final stage of investigation.

About 90 thousand Cubans from ten communities have been vaccinated with sovereign 2. CECMED confitms and described it as a “very safe” vaccine.

It is said to contain the COVID-19 antigen and tetanus toxoid combined. This combination gives sovereign 2 the immunity advantage over other vaccines and reaches the mucosa of the respiratory tract in order to prevent the entry of the virus.
