Nii Mensah Dza Nyomo I, Chief of Kwabenya Musuku, has admonished parents to cherish local Ghanaian languages and teach their children same to make them fluent in these languages.
According to the respected traditional ruler, this will instil sense of identity in them and also enhance pride and acceptance among them as Ghanaians.
He made the call at the Ghana Day celebration of the staff and pupils of Kwabenya M/A Basic School in Accra.
The celebration which was on the theme “Toasting our Nation’s Cultural Diversity in Unity”, showcased the unique culture heritage from the sixteen regions of Ghana.
The pupils displayed great performances on the various cultural elements in the various regions ranging from unique languages, food, history and dances, among others.
Nii Mensah Dza Nyomo who was the guest of honour at the ceremony, indicated the need for parents to instil love and appreciation of culture in their wards because according to him, “culture tells the story about who we really are as Ghanaians.
“If we go back and pick our culture and tradition, it will tell us where we have come from as a people and the destination we are heading to,” he added.
The chief of Musuku was worried about the strong affection of the youth of today for profane songs which may lead them to dangerous paths. He maintained that traditional songs have a lot of moral messages embedded in them and has the tendency of shaping society .
He expressed his willingness to continue supporting various cultural activities in his community.
“When you put your mind on songs from iresponsible song makers it may lead you astray…… our cultural songs are more important and full of moral lessons,” he stated.
On an abandoned school building at the premises of the Kwabenya M/A basic schools, the Chief said he wrote to the District Assembly seeking clarification on why the project has stalled but the responds indicate that, the Assembly need about GHC90, 000.00 to complete the project.
He was worried over that development, however, was quick to add that “as a traditional authority, we will not wait on central government for the funds to enable the project to be completed……we are putting measures in place to raise the necessary funds to complete it” he assured.
The pupils treated the gathering to very beautiful cultural displays to the admiration of their parents and all other invited guests present at the ceremony.
